Hardwired vs. Battery Smoke Detectors

Battery-only smoke detectors work, but they have limitations. Batteries die, people forget to replace them, and they operate independently — if the one in the basement goes off, you might not hear it upstairs.

Hardwired smoke detectors wire directly into your home’s electrical system with battery backup. They’re interconnected, so when one detects smoke, every alarm in the house sounds. This is the standard for new construction in Maine, and it’s what we recommend for every home.

Where Do Smoke Detectors Need to Be?

Maine code requires smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home including the basement. Carbon monoxide detectors are required on every floor with a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage.

Smoke Detector Replacement
